To those of you who still check this ghost town of a livejournal, I apologize and thank you. I haven't been posting for some time now (outside of the special request) because frankly, these are somewhat troubled times for me. I don't know what to make of it, but I don't feel like going on at length about it here on livejournal. This is not something I want to talk about with casual online-only friends, who (no matter how good of a person they actually are) will offer nothing but shallow words of support, because they either don't really care or don't want to get invested. I also dislike saying "woe is me" just for some cheap attention. I did that before, but I realize how unseemly and childish it is. However, I felt like I owe you guys an update on where I am, so here it is.

I'm actually leaving San Fran in a few days and heading back to Florida to try and clear my mind. Maybe join a local Tibetan temple (I assume they're abundant in Florida). The length of time I'll be there is undetermined - I'm there at least until I can get myself together in a reasonable manner. I also probably won't be updating this livejournal until that happens, unless something truly outlandish occurs (like me running into Daunte on a Carnival Cruise ship and him inviting me to the "party") and I can't help but post.

Feel free to contact me through other means if you want. If I don't respond, it's not because I don't want to talk to you, it's because I have no answers to any questions you may ask regarding this. But because I am who I am, here are some preset answers to what I believe would be the Top 10 questions asked of me:

1. Are you going to shoot yourself dead? Nope. At least not until Darko makes it big time in the NBA.
2. When did you decide to leave? Last month. Not the greatest month I've ever had, but not the worst either.
3. What are you going to do in Orlando? I honestly don't know. Maybe get that job at Books-A-Million I've been wanting since I was 15. It's imperative that I stay active, though.
4. Where are you going to live? If it appears I'm going to be in Florida for a little bit, I'll probably buy a house. But in the short term, my mom's graciously allowed me to stay with her for the (extreme) short-term.
5. Do you regret coming to San Fran without a job offer? Damn, these questions are a bit too incisive.
6. How can you afford a house? As some of you know, I came into a small amount of money. Enough to afford something decent. However, I'm tempted to leave the country with that money, buy a bar in North Africa and call it "Casablanca." I can also hire Don Cheadle. (I'm very much considering moving out of the country, but it feels too much like running away.)
7. Does this mean you can afford to pay Javad the 50 bucks you owe him? Not until Book 7. The fire has yet to be extinguished.
8. Do you feel you wasted the last few years of your life? The possibility of that being true keeps me up at night.
9. How can you expect to remain friends with people if you never talk to them? Honestly, I very much would like to remain friends with everyone. I love them, and I'm not so blessed that I can replace them at will. But I think it's too much to expect to remain friends with anyone.
10. Are you happy? Well, I'm certainly not pleased.

I haven't posted in a while, and wasn't planning on doing so this instant. But yesterday I got a request I couldn't ignore. Cos and Irving asked that I post about Georgetown's win over Duke in college basketball on Saturday, and I complied. Consider whatever debts I may have discharged, gentlemen.

I admit I used a bit of creative license, as I didn't watch the game, don't know the final score, and I haven't read anything about it. So here it is.

It was hot and steamy that afternoon in Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium. The air conditioning had busted earlier due to Coach K's insistence that the electricians do things the "Duke way" and slap their hands to the floor, representing total commitment to defense. The lead electrician broke three fingers. Some say the players bore the brunt of this stifling heat. Others say the fans suffered the most, as JJ Redick's bacne was in plain view due to the undershirt he normally wears to cover it being soaked with sweat. We may never know.

Anyhoo, Georgetown started the game quickly, as Allen Iverson was able to repeatedly score on against the fradulent former Defensive Player of the Year Steve "Wojo" Wojciechowski. The officials quickly evened things out, as they couldn't let a black man with tattoos (Iverson) and one with a severe overbite (Victor Page) tool two "hard-working" white guys, Wojo and Bobby Hurley. Iverson picked up two fouls with 10 minutes in the half, and GU Coach John Thompson was forced to sub in Kevin Braswell. Braswell wasn't up to par, and after a third turnover was benched. Braswell later stated he was too tired from the excitement of selling his couch to some Italian freshman kid from Long Island, despite the heavy presence of "love" stains.

Despite the dominating accent of Dikembe Mutombo, kidney failure of Alonzo Mourning, and sweat of Patrick Ewing, Duke's frontline of Christian Laettner, Elton Brand and Cherokee Parks held up well. Duke missed Grant Hill, who was recovering from 18 ankle surgeries over the last few years. Laettner, despite scoring lower on the SAT than J.R. Reid, was able to predict the exact spot to which Ewing would block Parks' shots. He was unable to fulfill the demands of sexing Mutomb. Shavlik Randolph came through, though.

The 2nd half featured at least 271 lead changes and 3 ties. GU star forward Roy Hibbert was all over the floor and scored 17 points, including a dazzling 10-point run that featured a dunk on Laettner so traumatizing it lead Laettner to reveal that he and Brian Davis did more than what he wrote in his nationally published diary, he stomped on that Kentucky player's chest because he hates small-breasted women, and to insanely claim he was a better player than Kevin Garnett. Duke stayed close, and took the lead late in the game on a 3-ball by Redick. Coach Thompson called timeout with 10 seconds left to sub in Fred Brown, begging him not to pass the ball to James Worthy. Brown nodded, accepted the inbounds pass, and promptly passed to another player who could've reprised Worthy's role as a Klingon in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Fortunately, this player was GU's Michael Sweetney, who scored the winning bucket at the buzzer.

Superfan Matthew C. summed up Georgetown's historic win best, saying "it doesn't get any better than this. Except for maybe MTV's Sunday Night Stew lineup. That Bam Margera, he's a real cut-up, but Steve-O is my favorite. He takes staples in his ass like a young me. Oh, and Daunte Culpepper has small hands."

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and will get to spend some time with friends/family/etc. I'm flying to Orlando in a couple of days and already feeling the stress of having to sit on an airplane for 6.5 hours. Not to mention I have a 1.5 hour stop in Houston, TX. Sleep is not going to come easy.

I spent about eight days trying to grow a Grizzly Adams Jake Plummer-esque beard. Results were dismal and scared small mammals. It was shaved earlier today. Was tempted to save the soulpatch.

You know what show I recently discovered and now try to Tivo whenever I can? Kim Possible. It's a really entertaining cartoon on Disney. Sometimes I worry about the state of kids (6-13) cartoons - it seems like most cartoons on TV nowadays are either crappy or aimed at adults (rather, men 18-35). What are kids going to watch? They're pretty much limited to Danny Phantom and Kim Possible. And they're on cable, so kids need parents who can afford cable to watch them. It can't be easy being a kid nowadays.

Well, I won't be a millionaire anytime soon. I wasn't able to invest in this one private equity fund that I was trying to. Eh, it happens. Not long after I got wind of another, more scandalous idea. A friend of a friend is interested in buying a porn company. That's right, a porn company. He and some guys are thinking about getting together enough capital to buy one. He would want my buddy to handle the business side of it (not the production studio). And my buddy would want me to work with him. Aside from the potential for the highest of high comedy, I dunno if I would work for them. I'm not opposed to investing in certain vices (gambling, porn, etc.) but actually working for them? A drug cartel sure, but not so much porn. What if I want to run for PTA President?

A good buddy is moving to Singapore for at least 1 year to work for eBay out there. There's a 15% chance he'll get caned, and a 40% chance he'll sleep with a girl who's actually a 14-year old Laotian boy. A group of friends and I are planning on flying out to Asia to visit. I might stay there, but not by choice. I might not be able to withstand 2 pan-Pacific flights.

Have I mentioned recently how awesome Springsteen is? For example, did you know that Carlton Banks' dance on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was actor Alfonso Ribiero's parody of Courteney Cox' appearance on Bruce's Dancing in the Dark video? I was critically thinking about this topic, and I began to realize there is a vast conspiracy afoot to bring down Springsteen's musical stature. This conspiracy reaches all walks of life, and below I reveal a few of this country's most notorious Springsteen-haters.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, though we were dealt the sad news that Pat Morita died. I still don't know what to say. I've probably seen The Karate Kid about 100 times, and it still never gets old. I have weekly arguments with one friend over why he prefers Karate Kid II over the original. It's a defining movie of my life (a quick top 5, in no order: Star Wars, Top Gun, Star Trek IV, Karate Kid, Rocky IV), despite the fact that it didn't really change or influence my life one bit.

The author of The Berenstein Bears also died.

Over the weekend a friend and I shot some footage we want to edit into a music video to submit to some local film festivals/competitions. If all goes well, I'll try and post a link to it. It's a good bet that this will be a disaster, seeing as how we have no filming or editing experience(and we have no budget), but you never know.

While we were reviewing the footage we got, we were also watching the A&E behind the scenes look at Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Besides revealing that Dan Radcliffe and Emma Watson are totally hot for each other, my friend (who's never read the books and only seen movie 1) got his first look at older Ron. He kept laughing and saying "Where are the mushrooms, Ron?"

Speaking of Goblet of Fire, I finally saw it. Far better than the first two, but lacked the organic magic and imagination of Azkaban. I really don't have issues with them leaving stuff out or the choppiness, because GoF was the size of a dictionary. They had to pick and choose. I do wish they left out the Yule Ball or somehow changed the placing of it in the movie, because that scene felt a little gratuitous and out of place. I very much enjoyed the end, despite some awkward "acting" moments from Mr. Radcliffe (nothing on the scale of "He was THEIR FRIEND!" from Azkaban, luckily). The movie really should have ended soon after Harry brought back Cedric's body - that last little bit was kinda lame.

Azkaban is still the only one that can stand as a separate movie rather than a episode, maybe because it really was the only one of the books to have a plotline that can stand alone. Some see this as a detriment, because Azkaban is supposed to be the 3rd episode of Potter. I disagree.

I realized today that all my law school files were lost when I had to reburn this laptop's HD. Notes, writings, papers, Chess Club constitution - you name it, I lost it. Another piece of evidence that I ever went to law school gone. I'm down to a battered copy of the Federal Rules of Evidence (2002-2003), a diploma that's somewhere in my room, and some dusty photos. So I'm sitting here, eating slightly stale Triscuits with a mug of lukewarm water. Where are the mushrooms, Jon?

Below is the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I'm going to make a longer post about some investigative forays through Wikipedia, which a buddy of mine called the HitchHiker's Guide to the Earth, after he looked up Webster Slaughter (a Cleveland Browns receiver in the late 80s-early 90s) on it. I can't say that he's wrong.

OK, I haven't actually seen the movie, but I'm getting that queasy feeling about it. Maybe it's because someone of my "convictions" regarding the books might find certain elements of the movie unsatisfying, I dunno. A better explanation might be that since I've soured on the books a bit, I don't want the excellent, beautifully-rendered PoA soured in a similar fashion by what is likely a lesser movie. Frankly, movie PoA is all I got left of Potter.

Speaking of movies, a discussion on Spielburg's "War of the Worlds" arose yesterday, and someone asked the name of the child actress who's been in like 500 movies recently. None of us could name her. I still can't, and I don't feel like checking imdb.com. I know it's an unusual name, and the best I've come up with is "Diagram Maxwell."

Of greater importance is the release of the 30th anniversary edition of Springsteen's Born to Run. The documentary DVD is supposedly great, but nothing compared to the concert DVD of at London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1975 - the E Street Band's first overseas performance. I have not gotten around to purchasing this yet (shocking!), but that's a good thing. I'm not quite prepared for the kind of greatness watching those bonus DVDs would bring. There is such a thing as being too happy, and I want nothing to do with that. I'll probably pick it up when I care a little less (which means I'll never get it because caring a little less about Springteen is impossible).

Did you know that the E Street Band is on Stephen Colbert's "Notice List?" The Colbert Report is a good show, but it really should be a weekly thing. Somewhat similar to how daily editions of the O'Reilly Report is too much O'Reilly, it's too much Colbert. Or maybe not.

Ok, I think that's enough of the Cos Special. Glad to have him make an appearance, though.

This weekend I had a couple of visitors here in SF - Mila and Teresa. I hadn't seen either in a long while, and it was a treat to show them around a few parts of San Fran. I'm glad they took some time off their busy schedule to stop by. However, seeing/talking to people only once a year as opposed to nearly every day for three years always changes things, and you never quite know how things are going to shake out.

Knowing that, here are some thoughts:

1. At times, it was like I was hanging out with two strangers with familiar faces. They would talk among themselves for long stretches about things I don't know anything about, and then they'd remark how I was contributing nothing. It only got worse when they met up with another person from Teresa's firm. I know I wasn't saying much, but I don't know anything about shopping or working at a law firm. You gotta give me something more to work with. This didn't happen too often, but it was enough to show the only thing I really had in common with them ended over a year ago.

2. It's like my years at law school never happened. Mila and Teresa would often reference people or events from law school, and I would struggle to remember them. I actually noticed this memory erosion before they visited. Every day the memories I still have seem less real. Sometimes it seems as if I graduated from college, fell into a void for 3 years, and now I have these law school friends along with fuzzy recollections of how we became friends. Maybe it's because I don't work in the law, and the only person from law school I see out here is Rachel, whom I didn't really hang out with back then and therefore doesn't trigger old memories. I don't know.

3. I don't think the person they were hoping to see is who I am now.

4. No matter what (even being forced to go shopping for 8 straight hours), I'm glad I got to see them. It doesn't happen often enough.

5. I am dominating my fantasy football league.

Has anyone tried those sudoku puzzles in the paper? I've tried them a few times, to no success whatsoever. It's upsetting me, as I pride myself on my skill in newspaper games. I even won a contest involving a newspaper game. I guess my inability to do sudoku puzzles is because they are logic-based, whereas crossword puzzles are exercises in simple memory retention.

I'm beginning to realize that one's reputation can be a hard thing to shake, because people here in California are already calling me "The Closer" because I close out sudoku puzzles. They must think that my skill at crosswords transfers to sudokus, when it actually doesn't. Give me time, though.

The Husain-o is one week away from winning Will D's fantasy baseball league. If this happens, expect him to crow about it for the next 50 years. As for my fantasy teams, I finished 7th in one baseball league, I should finish 7th in Will's league, and I'm currently 2nd in a football league.

Speaking of Husain-o, he apparently will be in Vegas on New Year's and invites everyone to join him. However, he currently refuses to reveal any details besides "Vegas on New Year's." This sounds like a great plan.

Check out Jonah Hsu for some good tunes. Buy his CD, it's only $5. The samples he has on his website don't really do them justice, as the tracks on the CD are mastered and sound much better.

Time:11:05 pm
After eight months of waiting, today was the first Sunday of NFL Football. More importantly, it was the first Vikings game. So I headed out to a sports bar anticipating an easy Vikings victory over the Bucs.

What did I get? An impossibly ugly 24-13 loss where Daunte committed FIVE turnovers (3 INTs, 2 fumbles). The entire offense sucked. It usually takes me until midseason to get sick of football, but after today the next 16 Sundays on my calendar may have opened up. I think I'll give the Vikings a few more games to get their act straightened out, and then I'll issue a ruling. But right now I am disgusted with sports.

To add insult to injury, my fantasy football team lost by 7 points, and my best wideout Javon Walker was likely lost for the season due to injury.

But a couple good things came from today's disaster. 1) Cos drafted Daunte in his fantasy league, and his team without a doubt lost this week. 2) I have 3 picks left in a $14,000 football pick 'em pool.

As it stands, I'm too bummed and exhausted to get into what I've been up to lately. I'll post again in a few days.

I was bored today and watched one of my roommate's DVDs - Ghost World, starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson. It was based off a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes and is about two friends. There are two major flaws with this film:

1. The movie's description and advertisements all mentioned the two girls equally, but the movie is mostly about Enid, Birch's character. Why not just say so?
2. No one would ditch Scarlett Johansson to hang out with Steve Buscemi. Buscemi's a great actor and probably has a million entertaining stories, but come on. It's Scarlett frickin' Johansson.

A friend mentioned to me during a phone call that he was concerned about becoming one of those business-type assholes. You know, the ones who a) refuse to admit that they don't know something, b) are perpetually impressed by themselves c) spout non-stop nonsense about money and the "markets" and d) wear Seven jeans, Tod's, and Thomas Pink shirts (alternated with Lacoste polos). I told him in response that the only way to bag a classy lady was to get her two tickets to the gun show and see if she likes the goods.

Another friend celebrated his 26th birthday on Sunday. While chatting, we casually joked around that 30 was right around the corner, and what a nightmare that will be. But when I think about it, I disagree that 30 is right around the corner. I know it seems like time is flying by, but 30 for me is still over 4 years away for me. 4 years is a long time. A million things have happened since I was 21, and a million things can happen from now until 30. If I blink and all of a sudden I'm 30, I can only blame myself.

Subject:Here is a post about tennis.
Time:10:40 pm
Missed posting every two weeks by a few days, but I guess it still counts. I'm doing okay, and life has been fairly uneventful. I seem to have little to no short term memory nowadays, and I apologize for not being able to recount more of my activities. I did make soup from scratch for the first time ever, and it turned out fair. I was rather pleased.

In the past month or so I seem to have developed an unhealthy fascination with "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy." I can't really explain it, because Anchorman was not a good movie. But there are specific scenes, concepts and lines that just kill me. If you want any examples, just let me know. And London Gentleman is always a better cologne choice than Blackbeard's Delight.

I couldn't resist and joined a fantasy football league. It's a 10 team Yahoo public league where I don't know anyone, but I had to play. You start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK and 1 DEF. 6 points for any TD. I think I drafted well, but I made a few potential missteps. No Vikings on my team, which distresses me greatly. I had the fourth pick, but I couldn't take Daunte that soon, not with Shaun Alexander (my pick) and Priest Holmes available. Daunte went four picks later.

While watching Roger Federer beat Andy Roddick for like the 100th straight time, I thought about the perfect tennis player. This is what I came up with, only using players from the last 20 years.

Goran Ivanisevic's serve - no one brought the heat like him. Roddick is a product of racket technology.
Ivan Lendl's forehand - ruled the US Open (3 wins, 5 second place finishes) with his forehand.
Pete Sampras' running forehand - the best single-shot weapon in the game for 10 years.
Federer's backhand - he can do anything he wants with it.
Stefan Edberg's volleys - fantastic touch and placement.
Michael Chang and Lleyton Hewitt's guts and determination - these guys chase every ball, no matter the score.
Andre Agassi's timing and coordination - allowed him to hit the ball earlier than anyone and create ridiculous angles.
John McEnroe's touch and feel - like it or not, Johnny Mac was (is) a tennis genius.
Lendl's mental toughness - the only person to really break him was Chang, in their legendary 5-set duel at the '89 French Open.
Federer's movement - he's never out of position and always sets his body perfectly.
Boris Becker's strength and athleticism - the big German was a physical freak.
Martina Hingis' strategy - before she went crazy, she was the foremost on-court thinker.
Marat Safin's '05 Australian Open girlfriend - can't be the perfect tennis player without the super hot Russian girlfriend.

I'm sure I forgot some things, and I wish I could've found space for more 80s guys like Mats Wilander, Yannick Noah, Pat Cash and Jimmy Connors. I also don't think enough people remember how awesome Lendl was - the man made 8 straight US Open finals, and the US Open is considered the most democratic and fair major, due to the hardcourt surface (unlike clay or grass).

I don't really have much to say, but I felt like posting to keep a schedule of posting at least every two weeks.

I've had some pretty bad computer problems lately, and I may need to reburn the HD on my primary laptop. This would seriously piss me off, as I'd lose a lot of important data and some of it (like personal photos and whatnot) can't be replaced. After 15 years of being a good soldier, I think I'm finally done with Windows. I knew how much it sucked, but I never got burned like other people did until now. All I need now is $1200 to buy a new Mac laptop. Time to call up Wesley Snipes and start hustling some streetball.

I caught a bad case of food poisoning last week. Not good. But, it did prevent me from having my crisis of faith that happens about once a week. Not a religious thing, but the "what the heck am I doing in SF" kind of thing.

I noticed last week that Will D posted the recipe to his chili that I always liked. I would try to make it, but it seems rather difficult and it has a lot of ingredients. I know I'd screw it up. If I ever visit them in HI I expect it, though.

About 4 weeks left until football season starts. How will the Vikings let me down this time? The mind boggles.

EDIT: Just found out that Peter Jennings died of lung cancer. That sucks. All the newsanchors of my youth are dead or retired. Brokaw, Jennings, Rather, McNeil & Lehrer. Who the hell wants to watch Brian Williams? Not me.

EDIT #2: I know I shouldn't be surprised, but Mark Fuhrman is a Fox News Analyst.

EDIT #3: I'm watching Harry Potter 2 on TV right now, and wow, that is an awful movie. Alfonso Cuaron saved the franchise with PoA. Thank heavens Chris Columbus stopped directing them.

I was browsing through my old college emails to find the address of my old website. I didn't find it, but I did enjoy reading some emails that are now 8 years old. Seeing what I was like back then was entertaining, if a little sad. I really cared back then, but more surprising was that I didn't mind if people knew I cared. Now you have to get past so many layers of bullshit to reach the part of me that really cares. I'm also rather self-interested, because now I hate doing things that don't benefit me somehow. I think I might prefer it this way, and that's the part that's a little sad. I guess this may be an overreaction to how I used to be, and that someday I'll find the proper balance. Or I could be bitter about the fact that the last 4 years of my life were retarded and pointless. Either one is satisfactory and should be the basis of a future book titled "Jon, no one gives a shit about your maudlin ramblings."

So Javad wants to go to Vegas around Thanksgiving, and Will D is strongly considering it. I don't know if I'm down yet, as I don't know if I'll have the dough or if I want to leave my brother hanging. I haven't made up my mind. But I do know that if Javad has to plan this, it won't happen (no offense to Javad, but he knows it's true). I don't want to plan it either, as I just coordinated a Vegas trip a few months ago. Someone will pick up the slack, though, if this gets serious. I'd love to hang out with people, see the sights and gamble. Not necessarily in that order.

In fantasy news, I've moved up to 10th place (out of 18) in my serious league. In Will D's league, I'm still in dead last place, with no hope of moving up. Thanks, Ichiro.

In other news, I may not be in SF for much longer. I don't think I'm going to be a lawyer, so state bar membership is no longer a consideration, nor do I think I'll pay any more CA bar dues. My preference would be to stay here, but any reasons I have to stay are no longer compelling and could be overriden by a number of things. In 9 months I bet I'll be waiting tables at some Mongolian outpost. No, I won't be any good at it.
